THE INSPIRATION:
Sydney, the Owner/Director of Greater Impact and her husband Sam, have three beautiful children. In the midst of Covid madness, their oldest son, Alaska, began to lose his vision. Their family went from the thought of Alaska needing eye glasses, to him being diagnosed with a terminal illness, in less than a year. CLN3 Batten Disease, a genetically inherited, neuro-degenerative disease, for which there is no cure or treatment, entered their lives and was there to stay. Within the following year, both of their daughters, Everest & Wren, were also diagnosed with the disease. Adapting to a new normal, with the awareness that the disease will slowly rob their children of their sight, cognition, and mobility—they are standing firm in the soil of their faith in Jesus and fighting to find the sunlight of joy that surrounds them. Very quickly, the sunflower became a symbol of hope to their family and a metaphor for their children who must stand tall and find the light each and every day of their fight with Batten Disease.
Being in love with dance her entire life, Sydney dreamed of the day her children would take their first dance classes, which they did for a few sweet years. Now with the climate of their world always changing and shifting: more vision loss, seizures, and behavioral decline on the horizon, she wants to give her children, and all children with life-altering disabilities, the chance to dance, laugh, groove, and share their joy with those around them. Because in the end, as sad as it may be, and as difficult as the days are to bear sometimes, we are far better off because of who they are: bright, cheery, and full of extraordinary, beautiful life.
